Year 2 children sit the 7+ exams during the late autumn and early winter months. Year 6 children sit the 11+ exams during the first half of the autumn term in Year 6. Successful children are usually those working above the national level expected for their age group.

Verbal Reasoning

Verbal reasoning is designed to test your child’s verbal comprehension, their ability to reason and to be logical. High performing children are avid readers with a sound grasp of vocabulary. There are different question types in verbal reasoning and we teach strategies for solving them. The different question types in verbal reasoning include:

Comprehension
Vocabulary
Synonyms
Antonyms
Coding
Odd one out
Finding missing letters
Rearranging words to form a sentence

Non-Verbal Reasoning

Non-Verbal reasoning tests your child’s ability to be logical, to think critically and to analyse codes, shapes, pictures and diagrams. High performing children are often proficient with mathematical concepts relating to rotation, symmetry, translation, shape and direction. They also have good spatial awareness. The programme of study includes aspects such as:

Rotation
Reflection
Nets of cubes
Finding identical shapes
Working out what shapes will look like when folded or assembled
